Body Corp is the alter-ego of Sydney musician, DJ and Retiree band member Marco Vella.
Born out of a necessity to intersect Marco’s love of the club while also focussing energy as one third of the band Retiree (Rhythm Section International), the Body Corp tracks focus on the dancefloor, while retaining the intrinsic groove that peppers his band’s composition. Across the aptly titled ‘Soft Expression’, the EP leaves smudgy fingerprints of central introspection. The aural equivalent to having an existential crisis on the dancefloor to the greatest sounding kick drum you’ve heard (we’ve all been there).
Sound recordings on a trip to Japan were where the EP began. No more is the Japanese culture’s influence apparent than on the EP’s title track where soft pads and eloquently pulsating synth lines demand the listeners attention. The EP was also heavily inspired by Marco’s long winding DJ sets that have become renowned in Sydney and Melbourne. ‘Landing’ is a perfect example of just that, where the track builds like an underground tunnel with no end in sight, only to open up to fresh sonic pastures of light. ‘Negative Reaction’ is more tech, more push than pull, and more bizarre than normal. The best is saved for last with the lead single rounding out the EP in ‘You Don’t Know’. A beautiful piece of house music that leans heavily on the 90s but with a modern touch. This track would be at home at both sunset and sunrise, and as the first or last track in a set. Either way, it’s a statement of intent.
The EP comes with a remix from one of Marco’s favourite producers in the form of Francis Inferno Orchestra’s ‘Goblin Magick Mix’, which is a hard and fast remix that takes the original up a few notches on the BPM counter and into a smoke-hazed Rotterdam club. Body Corp has previously released with Pelvis and this is his debut EP on Soothsayer.
